How to Get Your Family Calendar on Alexa (and What to Expect)

There is a specific moment this is for: hands covered in pancake batter, one kid half dressed, and you need to know if soccer practice is today or tomorrow. Getting your family calendar on Alexa means you just ask the kitchen speaker. No unlocking a phone, no scrolling, no "hang on, let me check."

First, where things stand. NestBoard has its own Alexa skill. It is built, and we are testing it before we submit it to Amazon for review. It is not in the Alexa Skills Store yet, so today an Echo will not know what NestBoard is. There is more on the skill at the end of this post.

What works right now goes through Google Calendar. Alexa can read a Google calendar you link in the Alexa app, and NestBoard can put your family calendar into Google. Four steps, maybe five minutes, and one honest caveat about freshness that I will get to below, because it changes what this setup is good for.

Step 1: Copy your private calendar link in NestBoard

Open Settings in NestBoard and tap Calendar subscription. You will see a private calendar link. Copy it.

Two things about that link before you paste it anywhere:

  • It is a secret address, not a login. Anyone who has the link can see the family calendar, so treat it like a house key. If it ever leaks, tap Reset link on the same screen. That creates a brand new link and the old one stops working right away.
  • Events marked adults-only are left out of the feed entirely, for everyone. The surprise party planning stays inside NestBoard, and Alexa will never announce it to the whole kitchen.

Step 2: Subscribe in Google Calendar

Alexa cannot subscribe to a calendar link by itself, but Google Calendar can, and Alexa can read Google Calendar. That is the bridge.

On a computer, open Google Calendar, find Other calendars in the left sidebar, click the plus, and choose From URL. Paste your NestBoard link and add it. It appears in your calendar list under the name NestBoard calendar. The subscription is read-only, so it can never change or delete anything in the rest of your Google account.

Step 3: Link that Google account in the Alexa app

In the Alexa app on your phone, open Settings and find the calendar section (recent versions call it Calendar, older ones Calendar & Email). Amazon moves this menu around between app versions, so look around if it is not there. Tap Add account, choose Google, and sign in with the same Google account that just subscribed to your NestBoard feed. Give it calendar permission when it asks, then make sure the NestBoard calendar is ticked in the list of calendars Alexa offers to include.

To be clear, this links Google to Alexa, not NestBoard. Alexa only ever sees the copy of your family calendar that lives in Google, and nothing gets installed on the Echo itself.

Step 4: Ask

"Alexa, what's on my calendar today?"

Alexa reads out the family schedule, NestBoard events included. "What's on my calendar tomorrow" and "what's my next event" work too.

What to expect: great for the weekly rhythm, slow on last-minute changes

Here is the honest part, and it matters enough that I would rather oversell the caveat than the feature.

Calendar apps refresh subscribed feeds on their own schedule, and Google is the slow one. It fetches URL-subscribed calendars on a cycle it has never published, and in practice a change can take many hours to show up, sometimes most of a day. NestBoard builds the feed fresh when Google asks for it. The wait is on Google's side, and there is no button anywhere, for you or for us, that makes it hurry.

So treat Alexa as the voice of your standing schedule. Practices, piano lessons, recurring appointments, school events, the stuff you put on the calendar days or weeks ahead: all of that will be there when you ask. What Alexa may miss is the dentist appointment your co-parent added twenty minutes ago. For same-day changes, the NestBoard app is always current, because it reads the calendar directly instead of waiting on Google.

If you know that going in, the setup is exactly as useful as it sounds. If you expect real-time, you will think it is broken. It is not broken, it is Google being Google.

A faster option if the lag is a problem

There is a second way to get NestBoard into Google, and it skips the refresh wait. Connect your Google account to NestBoard (Settings, then Calendar Sync, then Connect Google Calendar), and an adult in the household can turn on Show NestBoard events in Google Calendar on the same card. NestBoard creates a calendar called NestBoard in that Google account and copies your events into it, usually within seconds of a change. Link that same Google account in the Alexa app, tick the NestBoard calendar, and Step 4 works the same way.

Two things to weigh. If your household uses adults-only events, the subscription link is the route that leaves them out, so it is the safer choice for a speaker everyone in the kitchen can hear. And pick one route per Google account, not both, or Alexa will read every event twice.

One more thing while you have that link copied: it works anywhere calendars subscribe by URL, so Outlook (Add calendar, then Subscribe from web) and Apple Calendar (File, then New Calendar Subscription) can show the same family schedule. What the NestBoard skill will add

The Google route only lets Alexa read your calendar. The skill talks to NestBoard directly. Once it is live, your family will be able to ask what's for dinner, add to the shopping list without touching a phone, put an event on the family calendar by voice (kids included), and have Alexa ring when chores are due.

Connecting it will not involve the Alexa app's calendar settings at all. You say something to the skill on any Echo, Alexa reads out a short code, and an adult signs in at mynestboard.com/alexa and types the code in. That links every Echo in the house at once. There is nothing to set up for it today. The Alexa section in NestBoard's Settings will show you when it is ready, and we will update this post then.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to put my family calendar on Alexa? Yes, with normal care. The feed link is a secret address that only shows your calendar to whoever holds it, the subscription is read-only, and you can tap Reset link in NestBoard settings at any time to kill the old link instantly. Events marked adults-only never enter the feed at all, so on that route they cannot show up in Google Calendar or be read aloud by Alexa.

Do I need an Alexa skill for my family calendar? Not for the Google Calendar route. Alexa reads linked Google calendars on its own, so once NestBoard is in Google Calendar, calendar questions just work. NestBoard's own skill is built and being tested, but it is not in the Alexa Skills Store yet. When it launches you will connect it with a short code at mynestboard.com/alexa.

Why is Alexa a day behind my NestBoard calendar? If you used the subscription link, it is Google's refresh cycle. URL-subscribed calendars can take many hours to update, and Alexa only knows what Google Calendar knows. The Show NestBoard events in Google Calendar switch gets changes into Google within seconds, and the NestBoard app itself is always current.

Can Alexa add events to my NestBoard calendar? Not through the Google route. If you ask Alexa to add something, it goes into a Google calendar, not into NestBoard, so the rest of your household will not see it on the board unless that Google calendar is one NestBoard reads in through Calendar Sync. For now, add family events in NestBoard itself. Adding events to the family calendar by voice is one of the things the NestBoard skill will do once it is live.
