The problem with turning reminders off

A few weeks ago, a parent told us she'd started silencing her daughter's ADHD medication reminder at 7 AM because it kept going off during first period. The reminder worked great on weekends, but on school days it just caused friction, an alert the kid couldn't act on, disrupting class.

Her workaround was to disable the reminder Sunday night and re-enable it Friday afternoon. It worked, but she had to remember to do it. And twice she forgot, which meant missing a weekend dose.

We heard versions of this from other households too. Evening supplements that buzz at bedtime when toddlers are finally asleep. Early-morning meds that ping the kitchen tablet at 6 AM on a Saturday, waking the house.

A schedule, not an off switch

The new quiet hours toggle lets you set a window when medication alerts won't sound. You still see the reminder in the meds list if you open it, and it'll still log as overdue if you don't mark it, but it won't chime or vibrate.

You can set one quiet window per household (like 10 PM to 7 AM), or customize it per medication. The ADHD med goes quiet during school hours. The melatonin reminder stays silent overnight so it doesn't wake anyone if you missed it.

It's a schedule for when the system should speak up, not a switch you have to remember to flip.

Why we didn't make it automatic

We considered detecting sleep hours from calendar patterns or guessing based on dose timing. But the whole point of shared bottles and medication tracking is to support the rhythms your household actually keeps, not impose our guess at what "normal" looks like.

Some families do bedtime meds at 7 PM. Others at 10. Some want gentle reminders even during quiet hours; others need total silence.

So we made it a toggle. You set it once and adjust if your routine changes. It's in the medication detail screen, right under the dose schedule.

One less thing to remember

The mom with the first-period reminder texted us after she turned it on: "I didn't realize how much mental overhead that Sunday flip was taking up."

That's the goal. Reminders should help, not add another task to the list.
